European Studies
European studies majors approach Europe as a cultural complex of diverse nations, languages, traditions, problems, and resources. Majors acquire a broad background in contemporary Europe and its origins from historical, political, economic, and cultural points of view. Through this comprehensive study of Europe and its heritage as well as its interactions with non-European nations, students will deepen their understanding of the world. Program OverviewStudents will take courses that focus on contemporary European culture. They also take courses in modern European history and in various disciplines. Extensive course work is required in one of the following foreign languages: French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, or Spanish. All majors are required to complete a minimum of six units in an approved study abroad program in a European country. Career OpportunitiesEuropean Studies is a broadening discipline for the undergraduate who wishes to learn the key issues in Europe’s past and present. The major is designed to offer pre-professional training for a variety of careers. The student may find a career as an international marketing representative; travel agent; museum curator; international press corps or diplomatic corps; librarian; international legal or financial consultant; or writer, teacher, or researcher specializing in Europe.
