European Studies
The establishment of a unified European economic community, contested borders, the breaking down of distinctions between east and west, gender and immigration issues, the reconciliation of national and ethnic identities with European integration, the idea of Europe in a postcolonial world – for the student with interests in these and other issues of global importance, European Studies offers the opportunity to develop an individualized academic program. European Studies is based on the premise that language and culture are intertwined in the understanding of contemporary Europe.
European studies majors approach Europe as a cultural complex of diverse nations, languages, traditions, problems, and resources. Majors acquire a broad background in contemporary Europe and its origins from historical, political, economic, and cultural points of view. Through this comprehensive study of Europe and its heritage as well as its interactions with non-European nations, students will deepen their understanding of the world.
Program Overview
Students will take courses that focus on contemporary European culture. They also take courses in modern European history and in various disciplines. Extensive course work is required in one of the following foreign languages: French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, or Spanish. All majors are required to complete a minimum of six units in an approved study abroad program in a European country.
Career Opportunities
European Studies is a broadening discipline for the undergraduate who wishes to learn the key issues in Europe’s past and present. The major is designed to offer pre-professional training for a variety of careers. The student may find a career as an international marketing representative; travel agent; museum curator; international press corps or diplomatic corps; librarian; international legal or financial consultant; or writer, teacher, or researcher specializing in Europe.
