Russian and Central European Studies
The
importance of understanding the governments and political structure of
the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and Central Europe is readily
apparent by observing the role they play in current events. In addition,
their rich cultures and traditions are subjects of great value. The Russians
and Central Europeans have made major contributions to the world's literature,
arts and sciences. For students who wish to deepen their understanding
of this part of the world within a broad framework, SDSU's major in Russian
and Central European studies may be an appropriate choice.
The goals of the Russian and Central European studies major are to promote the study of Russia, the CIS, and Central Europe within an integrated interdisciplinary framework, and to build better understanding of the societies and cultures of Central Europe and the CIS through the exchange of students, faculty and publications.
Program Overview
Preparation for this major requires competency in the Russian language, achieved by a four-semester study in the reading, writing, and speaking of Russian. At the upper-division level, students are required to take courses in economics, geography, history, humanities, political science, advanced Russian, and approved electives.
Special Features
The unique features of the Russian and Central European studies major include:
- Dobro Slovo: an honorary Russian language and literary society.
- The Russian Club: a student organization that sponsors activities and events of special interest.
- The Language Acquisition and Resource Center at SDSU: a state-of-the-art facility, where students may practice their speaking and listening skills by using interactive video, participating in computer-assisted instruction, viewing videotapes of Russian television programs, listening to Russian recordings, or other means.
Career Opportunities
The United States and the CIS are in the process of expanding their commercial and cultural ties, opening unprecedented opportunities for majors in Russian and Central European studies in government service, journalism, library work, and international business.
For those who continue graduate work after completing the bachelor's degree, Russian and Central European studies is a good preparatory curriculum for graduate professional programs in international trade, international law, librarianship, education, public administration and journalism.
