SDSU Service Area
Upper-Division Transfer
Admission Criteria - Fall 2005
Transfer students will be admitted to a premajor
or major. To be considered for admission to SDSU, transfer applicants
should meet the following minimum CSU eligibility requirements and
SDSU requirements. Applicants not meeting the following requirements
will be ranked based on how closely they meet the criteria and considered
for admission on a space-available basis.
- Applicants must apply during the CSU initial admission application
filing period, October/November 2004 for fall 2005 admission.
Submit a supplemental application at www.sdsu.edu/portal
between December 15, 2004 and January 15, 2005.
- Applicants must submit required documentation by deadlines.
- Complete a minimum of 60 transferable semester units by the
end of spring 2005.
- Complete all lower-division General Education
(GE) by the end of spring 2005. GE requirements in written communication,
oral communication, critical thinking, and mathematics must be
completed with a "C" or higher in each course.
- By the end of spring 2005, complete all preparation for the
major courses that are articulated or approved as equivalent (see
online Transfer Admission Planner) and offered
at the college(s) attended in the year prior to transfer. Some
impacted majors have specific grade expectations for individual
courses or combination of courses that must be met. If the preparation
for major courses in combination with the 39 units of GE exceed
60 units, students are only required to complete 24 units of preparation
for the major courses.
- GPA Requirements:
- Applicants must meet the GPA required for the impacted
major (see online Transfer Admission Planner).
- Applicants must meet the required GPA at the time of application,
and they must maintain the GPA through the end of spring 2005.
NOTE:
- Transfer students who are admittted to a major or premajor
must petition if they decide to request a change of major
after enrollment at SDSU.
- Music and dance major applicants must audition for acceptance
to the major.
- SDSU is not accepting applications for second bachelor
candidates.
- There is an additional application and additional ranking
criteria for Nursing applicants.

Transfer Studies Degree (TSD) Program Admission
Guarantee
The TSD program enables students attending
a community college in the SDSU service area to sign an agreement
that will guarantee admission into an impacted major at SDSU if
all criteria are met. Contact your community college Transfer Center
for more information.
Online Transfer
Admission Planner (TAP)
SDSU’s TAP program is a repository of
courses that have been articulated or approved as equivalent between
SDSU and other colleges and universities. Go to TAP
to learn if a specific course at your institution will meet a specific
course requirement at SDSU.
TAP is available at www.sdsu.edu/tap.
Through TAP, you can identify:
- Which General Education and major preparation courses available
at your college are articulated or approved as equivalent with
SDSU courses.
- The GPA and course grade requirements for your major.
Supplemental
Transfer Application
All transfer applicants must submit an additional
online supplemental application. Beginning December 15, 2004, visit
www.sdsu.edu/portal and
follow the instructions to create a portal account. You must have
a working e-mail address to activate your account. Once you have
a portal account, choose "Supplemental App" to begin the
process. To ensure accuracy, obtain a personal copy of your transcripts
prior to filling out the supplemental application.
The supplemental application will ask you
to:
- Verify your self-reported grade point average and the number
of units you will complete by the end of spring 2005.
- Provide information about all lower-division GE courses and
preparation for the major courses you have taken, including course
titles, number of units, and grades earned.
The deadline to submit the supplemental application
is January 15, 2005.
General Education
(GE) Courses
You must complete all lower-division GE by
the end of spring 2005. SDSU’s TAP
will help you identify which courses at your college may be used
to meet the GE requirements at SDSU.
Please refer to the following options:
GE Certification: Students
transferring from a California community college can complete the
CSU GE certification pattern to satisfy all lower-division GE requirements.
Intersegmental General Education Transfer
Curriculum (IGETC): The IGETC is a series of courses that
community college students can use to satisfy lower-division GE
requirements at any CSU or UC campus. The majority of the units
must be completed at a California community college.
SDSU General Education Pattern:
Engineering, Liberal Studies, Nursing, single subject credential
majors, and all students outside of the California community college
system should follow an SDSU GE pattern. Visit www.sdsu.edu/generaleducation
for details.
A grade of C or higher is required
in each of the following courses:
Oral Communication: Basic
public speaking course. Other communication courses that are certified
by a California community college will be accepted.
Written Communication: Typically
a freshman composition course that emphasizes essay writing or reading
and writing concurrently.
Critical Thinking: Typically
your second semester composition or writing course, or a course
in reasoning and effective argumentative writing.
Mathematics: This course
must be beyond intermediate algebra.
Preparation
for the Major Courses
You must complete all major preparation courses
that are articulated or approved as equivalent and offered at the
college(s) attended during the year prior to transfer. TAP
will inform you if there are specific grade requirements for individual
courses or combination of courses.
You need to complete the major preparation
requirements that are in place at the time you apply. For fall 2005
admission, follow the fall 2005 requirements listed on TAP.
Graduation requirements may be different based on the catalog that
is in effect at the time you enroll at SDSU.
Grade Point Average
Requirement
Your grade point average (GPA) is based on
all transferable units attempted. The GPA required for your major
is available on SDSU’s Transfer Admission Planner. Outside-the-service-area
applicants will be selected based on a GPA ranking that may be higher
than the required impacted major GPA.
