SDSU Service Area
Upper-Division Transfer Admission Criteria - Fall 2007

To be considered for admission to SDSU, transfer applicants should meet the following minimum CSU eligibility requirements and SDSU requirements.

Application

  • Apply for admission at www.CSUMentor.edu during the CSU application filling period, which is October 1 – November 30, 2006 for fall 2007 admission.
  • After submitting the CSU application, complete the SDSU supplemental application that can be accessed through the SDSU WebPortal beginning October 1, 2006. You will be asked to update your grade point average to include fall grades, and to provide information about courses you have completed to satisfy General Education and preparation for the major requirements. The last date to submit the supplemental application is January 16, 2007.

Supplemental Transfer Application (mandatory requirement)

All transfer applicants must submit an additional online supplemental application. Beginning October 1, 2006, visit www.sdsu.edu/portal and follow the instructions to create a WebPortal account. You must have a Red ID and working e-mail address to activate your account. Your Red ID will be e-mailed to you within a few days of applying to SDSU. Once you have a portal account, choose "Supplemental Application" to begin the process. To ensure accuracy, obtain a personal copy of your transcripts prior to filling out the supplemental application. Do not submit your supplemental application until your fall grades and courses have been reflected on your transcript.

The supplemental application will ask you to:

  • Verify your self-reported grade point average and the number of units you will complete by the end of spring 2007.

  • Provide information about all lower-division GE courses and preparation for the major courses you will have taken by the end of spring 2007, including course titles, number of units, and grades earned.

The deadline to submit the supplemental application is January 16, 2007.

Eligibility

All transfer applicants must meet the following requirements to be considered for admission:

  • Complete a minimum of 60 transferable semester units by the end of spring 2007.
  • Complete General Education (GE) requirements in written communication, oral communication, critical thinking, and mathematics with a “C” or higher in each course by the end of spring 2007.
  • Meet the Grade Point Average (GPA) required for the major to which you apply (see www.sdsu.edu/majorgpa). Applicants must meet the required GPA at the time of application, and must maintain the GPA through the end of spring 2007.

Applicants who meet the criteria listed above will be ranked based on the completion of lower division General Education course work and preparation for the major.

NOTE:

  • Highly qualified lower-division transfer applicants may be admitted on a space-available basis.
  • Music and dance major applicants must audition for acceptance to the major.
  • There is an additional application and additional ranking criteria for Nursing applicants. See the School of Nursing Website for criteria.
  • SDSU is not accepting applications for second bachelor candidates.

Transfer Studies Degree (TSD) Program Admission Guarantee

The TSD program enables students attending a community college in the SDSU service area to sign an agreement that will guarantee admission into an impacted major at SDSU if all criteria are met. Contact your community college Transfer Center for more information.

Online Resources for Applicants

For information about General Education and major preparation courses,
use SDSU’s Transfer Admission Planner (TAP) at www.sdsu.edu/tap or ASSIST at www.assist.org. TAP and ASSIST are online systems that show how transfer course credits can be used to meet SDSU requirements. TAP includes course equivalency information for colleges and universities throughout the United States. ASSIST is the official repository of articulation for California’s public
colleges and universities.

TAP is currently in the process of being updated to reflect the 2006-2007 SDSU General Catalog.

General Education (GE) Courses

Students will be ranked based on how closely they complete their lower-division GE by the end of spring 2007. SDSU’s TAP will help you identify which courses at your college may be used to meet the GE requirements at SDSU.

Please refer to the following options:

GE Certification: Students transferring from a California community college can complete the CSU GE certification pattern to satisfy all lower-division GE requirements.

Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC): The IGETC is a series of courses that California community college students can use to satisfy lower-division GE requirements at any CSU or UC campus.

SDSU General Education Pattern: This option is commonly used by students majoring in Engineering, Liberal Studies and Nursing, and all students outside of the California community college system. Visit www.sdsu.edu/generaleducation for details.

A grade of C or higher is required in each of the following courses:

Oral Communication: Basic public speaking course. Other communication courses that are certified by a California community college will be accepted.

Written Communication: Typically a freshman composition course that emphasizes essay writing or reading and writing concurrently.

Critical Thinking: Typically your second semester composition or writing course, or a course in reasoning and effective argumentative writing.

Mathematics: This course must be beyond intermediate algebra.

Preparation for the Major Courses

Students will be ranked based on the completion of major preparation courses that are articulated or approved as equivalent and offered at the college(s) attended during the year prior to transfer. TAP will inform you if there are specific grade requirements for individual courses or combination of courses.

You need to complete the major preparation requirements that are in place at the time you apply. For fall 2007 admission, follow the fall 2007 requirements listed on TAP. Graduation requirements may be different based on the catalog that is in effect at the time you enroll at SDSU.

Grade Point Average Requirement

Your grade point average (GPA) is based on all transferable units attempted. The GPA required for your major is available on SDSU’s Transfer Admission Planner.
