Office of Advising and Evaluations

Step 1: Gather Documents

To follow along with the steps in this Advising Toolbox, you will need to open or print the following personalized documents:

Read on for details about each document, and scroll down to see what they look like. Your degree evaluation and Personal Information Sheet are included in your New Student Orientation packet (if you live outside of California and weren't able to attend orientation, these documents will bemailed to you).

Degree Evaluation

Your degree evaluation provides an unofficial status report on your progress toward completing the graduation requirements for your major. Coursework taken at SDSU and other colleges and universities will be included in the degree evaluation. Once you reach 90 units and apply for graduation, you will be sent an official graduation evaluation describing your remaining degree requirements. After you begin classes this fall, the degree evaluation will be available to you at any time in your SDSU WebPortal account.

General Catalog

Open the General Catalog in your web browser, but don't worry about printing—it's hundreds of pages! We'll let you know which parts to read later in this process. The General Catalog contains important information about university policies and procedures, graduation requirements, major requirements, and course descriptions. Incoming students follow the graduation and General Education requirements in effect during the academic year in which they enter SDSU. Students who declare or change their major in subsequent years must adopt the major and minor requirements in the General Catalog at the time of such change or declaration.

Major Academic Plan

The Major Academic Plan (MAP) lays out a recommended sequence of courses to follow in order to complete your degree in a timely fashion. It is designed to take into account General Education courses and major preparation courses that will satisfy multiple requirements with one course. The MAP also suggests sequencing to ensure that you complete prerequisite courses prior to taking the higher-level course. View the MAP for your major on your SDSU WebPortal at or at (make sure to choose catalog year 2017).

Personal Information Sheet

Your Personal Information Sheet provides information about required registration. Incoming freshmen are required to complete coursework in composition, mathematics, oral communication, and critical thinking in a specific order. These enrollment requirements are enforced by the registration system. Your Personal Information Sheet details the sequence of courses you are required to take in your first three semesters at SDSU. You must be registered in these courses before you enroll in any other courses. You will not be able to drop these courses.
