COMPULSORY SERVICE

Admitted Applicants

Admitted applicants will be able to roll over their application during the duration of their compulsory service that prohibits them from attending SDSU as planned. Admitted applicants will retain the catalog rights for the original year for which they were admitted. Admitted applicants will be granted an extended leave of absence and must begin attending SDSU within 12 months after being released from compulsory duties. Students should notify the SDSU Office of the Admissions of plans for returning to SDSU as soon as possible.

Admitted students must submit to the Office of Admissions proof of compulsory service that prohibits them from attending SDSU prior to departure (preferred) or within 12 months after being released from compulsory duties. Reservists must show proof by providing activation orders; active duty military must provide a letter from a commanding officer.

Continuing Students

Continuing students called to compulsory service that prohibits them from continuing at SDSU will be dropped from their classes with no restrictions or academic penalty and will receive a full refund of registration fees, tuition, and graduation fees (parking fees will be reimbursed pro-rata). No administrative fees will be incurred for schedule adjustments. If students are unable to take care of business prior to leaving the university, refunds will be given upon return from compulsory service.

Continuing students must submit to the Office of the Registrar proof of compulsory service that prohibits them from attending SDSU prior to departure (preferred) or within 12 months after being released from compulsory duties. Reservists must show proof by showing activation orders; active duty military must provide a letter from a commanding officer.

Should students wish to attend a later semester, they will be placed on an extended leave of absence and will be given 12 months after being released from compulsory service to resume attending SDSU. Students should notify the Office of the Registrar of plans for returning to SDSU as soon as possible. Continuing students will not lose registration priority, catalog rights, or degree status. Continuing students who are establishing residency will continue to establish residency provided they do not establish residency elsewhere.

Students have the option of contracting with their professors to complete course work using an Incomplete contract. These contracts must be negotiated with faculty in accordance with the instructions contained in the General Catalog.

There will be no financial aid penalties for withdrawing, or negotiating Incomplete contracts for students called to compulsory military service. Students may, however, be required to submit an appeal if an approved incomplete makes them ineligible for aid due to Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements. Those receiving scholarships must also abide by the rules for the monetary gift in question. Those with federal educational loans will not be expected to make payments while on active duty. (Note: the student needs to contact the holder of the loan to request forbearance.)

Continuing students currently receiving MGIB benefits through the SDSU Veterans Center should contact the SDSU Veterans Center ASAP to discontinue payment of benefits.

The Aztec Shops bookstore will provide a refund for books for students who return books during their current semester with receipts and proof of compulsory service. Students without receipts will be considered on a case-by-case basis. For information about book returns, call (619) 594-7525.

For further information about this policy, contact the Veterans Center at (619) 594-5813 or e-mail Joan Putnam at putnam@mail.sdsu.edu. Updated information will be provided at www.sdsu.edu/veterans.
