Credit for Military Experience

San Diego State University is guided by the recommendations of the American Council on Education in granting undergraduate credit toward the bachelor's degree for military service. Post-graduate credit is not granted.

To obtain credit for military service, you must be fully matriculated, be enrolled at the university, and submit a SMARTS or AARTS transcript, Form DD-214 or DD-295.


College Transfer Credit


College Credit Options
San Diego State University offers several credit opportunities, including credit for military service/training and passing scores on the College Board Advanced Placement examination, selected College-Level Examination Program tests and Chauncy Group International - DSST Program tests (formerly known as DANTES Subject Standardized Tests). Students may also challenge courses by taking examinations at San Diego State University. A total of 30 units will be allowed for credit earned through examination (excluding Advanced Placement credit). This page provides details about these various credit opportunities.


Credit for Non-collegiate Instruction
San Diego State grants undergraduate degree credit for successful completion of non-collegiate instruction, either military or civilian, appropriate to the baccalaureate, that has been recommended by the Commission on Educational Credit and Credentials of the American Council on Education. The recommended number of units allowed can be found in the Guide to the Evaluation of Educational Experience in the Armed Services and the National Guide to Educational Credit for Training Programs.


Academic Credit for Military Service
The university is guided by the recommendations of the American Council on Education in granting undergraduate credit toward the bachelor’s degree for military service. All credit awards are lower-division credit. Postgraduate credit is not granted.

To obtain credit for military service, you must be fully matriculated, be enrolled at the University, and submit one of the following: AARTS or SMARTS transcript, Form DD-214, or DD-295. SDSU does not award credit for MOS ratings.


Credit for Advanced Placement Examinations
San Diego State University grants credit toward its undergraduate degrees for passing scores on the Advanced Placement Program exams. Students who present scores of 3 or better may be granted college credit. Information about the Advanced Placement Credit awards can be found at the Office of Advising and Evaluations. Credit by Examination
Students may challenge courses by taking examinations developed at San Diego State University. Up to 30 units will be awarded to those who pass the examinations successfully. The grade(s) earned (including a grade of “F”) will be used in the SDSU grade point calculations. At the discretion of the department, a grade of Credit/No Credit may be awarded instead of a letter grade; a maximum of 15 total Credit units may be applied toward an undergraduate degree.

If you are interested in applying for credit-by-examination, contact the appropriate department(s) since each department has the option of excluding any or all of its courses from credit by examination or of setting special conditions on the student requesting this option. Approval to receive undergraduate credit-by-examination is granted at the discretion of the appropriate college authorities and under certain conditions listed in the General Catalog.


Credit for College-Level Examination Program (CLEP)
The university grants credit for selected CLEP examinations in which a minimum computer based testing score of 50 has been received.
