SIMS/R ACCOUNTS

In order to enhance security in accessing the SIMS/R student database, users can only access the database via a secure Web interface. Users previously accessed SIMS/R via a direct connection to the SIMS/R database. Beginning October 31, 2008, the direct client will be eliminated.

We are requiring that you re-submit a request for SIMS/R access if you still need to use the database. If you do not submit a request for a SIMS/R account, we will assume that you no longer need access and your account will be closed on October 31, 2008. The SIMS/R account request form is located below.

SIMS/R Frequently Asked Questions

How do I print SIMS/R screens?

SIMS/R screens are designed for display on a screen. However if you need to print, from the Action menu select Print.

Can I change my SIMS/R password?

No.

Why is the SIMS/R screen so small?

The SIMS/R screens are designed for 800x600 screen resolution. Most newer computer systems are set to higher resolutions (such as 1024x768), which make the SIMS/R screens look small.

What do I do after the login screen?

First enter your username, password and database. Enter the screen code and then press F8 (the F8 key is usually the top row of keys on your keyboard). The screen code is the name of the screen you use (e.g. S10, S86). Leave Key 1, Key 2, and Key 3 blank.

I am using an Apple computer and having trouble using SIMS. What should I do?

You can use your Apple computer as is, or make a small change to the system preferences depending on your own usage and preference.

Apple makes use of the F1, F2, F3, etc. keys by default to handle various system tasks. Some examples of these are:

  • F4 and F5 keys are used to adjust the volume of the system.
  • F9, F10, F11 are used for Expose and Spaces.

When the system is set up this way, which may be more convenient depending on how often you use these settings versus how often you are in SIMS, you can still opt to send a "true" F1, F2, etc. key by using the combination of the "Fn" key and then press your desired function key. For example, "Fn + F8" instead of only F8.

If that is not acceptable, then follow these steps:

  1. Click the Apple in the top left corner
  2. Select System Preferences
  3. Select Keyboard Applet
  4. Place a check box in the section which states:
Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys
  5. Note: if checked and you wish to use the special feature normally assigned to the function key, you now need to combine with the "Fn" key.
  6. Click the red circles to close the preference windows.
  7. Run your application that expects standard function key inputs.

If you are still having issues using your Apple computer, please contact your department’s IT staff.
